Through the Laundry Room

Clothes on the line drying in the Monhegan Island sun, is a common site on this small Island 12 miles off the coast of Maine sometimes socked in with fog and waiting for the sun to break through. I was captured by this view through the laundry room to the back clothes line ready and waiting for the next load of laundry. The fog was lifting and the sun's warmth began to show through.

Wind and sun is used on the island to conserve energy giving a fresh scent to the clothes, sheets and towels. There is something nostalgic about laundry on the lines blowing in the breeze. Maybe it is the memories of our mom's hanging clothes that danced in the sunshine and smelled so good. And the memories in winter when they came in stiff as boards! I remember my mom using stretchers for my dad's pants, because she hated to iron. They would stand up by themselves and  we kids always got a kick out of them. There is a homey feel to this sight. A reminder of the carefree days of childhood. Even when mom had a dryer, she always hung the clothes on the line in good weather. It was an opportunity to get outside into the fresh air, which she preferred to being inside doing housework. Maybe there is a lesson here that we have forgotten as we quickly throw our clothes into the dryer, and miss out on the morning chirps of birds, feeling the sun on our backs and the breeze on our face and perhaps some time to talk to our Creator as we begin our day.

Until next time, Val
