Monhegan Island hosts 17 miles of hiking trails. Climb up pass the lighthouse and on to a trail that leads you to the back side of the island to a rocky knoll named Gull Cove where all you can see sky and ocean and lots of big smooth rocks to climb on. You will hear surf crashing against the shore and many gulls cry as they soar over head. I turned and looked back to where I came out of the woods and onto the rocks. I liked the depth of the near pines against those further back in the fog. I set up and painted this scene on sight.
